Good Humor – Bad Logo Design

As a graphic designer, if you haven’t searched “logo design” on Google lately, you’re not missing much…except maybe a good chuckle at the headlines you find. As a business owner looking for a new logo designer, the list below is the sad result, with a tiny sprinkling of legitimate logo designers in the mix if you really look hard. Please do yourself a huge favor and avoid the ones like these!

  • $10 Custom logo design – Transform your brand ideas!

I was going to stop at 10, but that last one was too good to leave off! Wow – Wouldn’t you love to transform your brand and get a custom logo for 10 whole dollars?! Do people actually believe that can really be done?

The very foundation of a company, its core business identity, the most important first step in branding a business for success – it’s the company logo. And yet so many people fall for these cheap ads promising awesome logo designs – a quick fix that will transform your brand in a jiffy – in just 5 minutes – for ten dollars! Really? Even the under $50 offers for custom, eye-catching designs are far-fetched. And if you’re really talented, you can make your own logo for free – instantly – super easy! Perhaps this is why so many new companies don’t last.

And for companies that choose an option like these and actually do last…they probably owe their eventual success to a good designer who rescues them with some serious re-branding. So, in the long run, it ends up costing a lot more than if they had just hired a good graphic designer to begin with.

The cost of bad graphic design

Some may wonder what’s so difficult about creating a good logo. They’re small, look easy to do, so no problem, right? When you only see the result of a designer’s efforts, the logo creation can look like it was a simple task. But it’s not.

Logo design is a process. I use a Client Brief to gather important information for the logos I design. It's the first step in collaboration with the client to discover branding needs, goals, aspirations, and ideas. The process also takes researching the industry, trends that may relate to the company, competitors, and creative brainstorming before the design process even begins. Problem solve first – design later. It certainly can’t be done properly in 5 minutes or even an hour.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. You may be tempted by the thousands of ready-made logo options available on the internet for a low cost – just slap your company name on it and it’s yours – but please think twice. You’ll thank me later!

Sure, they may look nice and some are actually eye-catching, but what do they say about you and your company? Is there anything unique about it that helps your brand make a lasting impression on the world? No. Those logos are created with a broad audience in mind – a generic style that could work for a multitude of businesses. They are created to look nice. But there is more to a logo than just how it looks – it’s what it does - how it works. And if it was created without any thought of your company in mind, then it will fail. It will be nothing more than a fancy package for your company’s name. Your company deserves better!
