Just Because You Can DIY, Doesn’t Mean You Should


If you own a business, chances are you’ve probably done your share of DIY design projects, right? Or maybe you’ve passed those tasks off to your spouse? (I can relate – I’ve been the appointed one many times! But then, I’m a designer, so I’m not sure that counts. Okay, so explain the accounting tasks then!) If you’re still in DIY design mode, I just have one question. Why?

Is it because you want to save money and feel that it’s something you can do yourself? You know that you should invest in your business, but you’d rather invest in other areas that you absolutely cannot DIY. I get it. Save where you can.

But, just because you can do something, doesn’t necessarily mean you should - and for some very good reasons. The next time you have a graphic design project that needs done, before jumping into DIY mode again, stop and ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is this the best use of my time? Time is money - could I be more productive doing something else? How much revenue could I have produced during the time I spent on a DIY project – maybe more than I would have paid a professional designer?

  1. Will I love the end result? Or will I waste time on something that I’ll end up having to redo or pay to have redone anyway?

  1. Will the design do its job – accomplish the goal for which it was created? Will that Facebook post generate the engagement I want? Will my marketing materials produce new customers? Will my DIY website grab the attention of visitors in the average 8 seconds before they click to another website, never to return?

  1. Do I really want to spend my time doing this DIY design stuff? It may sound a bit selfish, but wouldn’t I rather spend my time doing something else? If I wanted to be a graphic designer, I probably would have become one, right?

  1. Will my DIY designs set me apart from my competition? Or will their stuff look better because they hired a professional designer? Can you really tell??

  1. How long am I going to put off hiring a professional designer? Am I really saving any time or money by doing it all myself?

  1. Could I actually be sabotaging my own business growth by going the DIY route?

  1. Doesn’t my business deserve for me to make an investment where it really matters?

I’m not going to speculate about your answers – you know in your heart how to best answer them. I just encourage you to be really honest with yourself. If you answered, “well, maybe”, “probably not”, or flat out “no”, to any, then you know what you need to do. You don’t need me to tell you. You just needed me to flip the light switch. :)

Now, I’m not saying that all your DIY designs are terrible. Not at all! You may have some natural artistic abilities and/or you may have done a lot of research or grabbed my “Simple Recipe For DIY Design” and put my design tips to good use. And if that’s the case, then good for you! Sometimes being Jack-of-all-trades pays off. But it can often cause a bunch of extra stress as well. So just learn to weigh your options.
